So, it's 1:30 am. Jake is playing "Hash Pipe" on an electric guitar in the living room. It's no wonder we're loners.

I just caught up - but think I missed a whole post - I saw TGIF cont. but no original TGIF? Going to have to check again!
We volunteered tonight at my sister's church packing meals for starving kids for this organization fmst.org its called Feed My Starving Children - they had some type of forumula made up for a food product made specifically for kids in third world countries that are starving, its soy, vegetables, rice and flavoring, and they only need to eat 1 cup of it a day - so you pack it into 6 servings at a time in a bag - and in the 2 hour shift we packed enough food to feed 175 children for a year! It was so much fun, they played music really loud and each "team" table was supposed to keep the rest of their team hyped up - really it was alot of fun, and the organization says taht 94 cents of every dollar go directly towards feeding the children - not sure how true that is... but the little talk that they give at the beginning and their website look really good - my sister's church raised $35,000 to have this group come to them, and pack the meals for I think this whole week. The photos they showed of the children and the stories were unbelievable. One little 7 year old boy was 19 lbs, and after being on these meals for only 16 days he was already looking better - 6 months later he was 72 lbs... makes ya feel good :)

BD I will keep good thoughts for your friends baby - 29 + weeks is pretty good - and over 2 lbs - I hope that it all goes well and she gets to go home healthy and happy!!

Does Shortround have a name yet? I'm having such anxiety about that poor baby growing up and finding out he didn't have a name for a month after he was born... How sad! Tell them to name the little guy already!!!

WooHoo! We do live the life, eh? Son is blasting away on DJ Hero. I finally got smart and am wearing head phones. Too bad I don't have a gas mask for "Rascal's" doggy farts :-D FYI - this poor dog turns out to be called Rascal.

FMSC rocks. I've packed there a bunch of times. Celebrated my half century with friends and family with a "party" there.
CK I never heard of it before - but yes, it was a blast, the staff made it fun, the music was keeping everyone going - and we did the 9pm - 11pm shift and had a great time - they seem to be a really worthwhile organization too. A little girl from my sister's church was doing a slumber party tonight for her bday and had 5 friends there with her for her bday - and they talked about her... it was cute!
Karen, I'm sorry, there was no TGIF part 1. I'm a dumbass. The Tracey Ullman video was the one just prior. And that kid gained over 50 pounds in 6 months on this stuff? Is that even healthy to gain that much that fast? I do want to go look at that site, though. I'm wanting to do something outside of our area but CI ain't it.

Random, but one of the few regrets in my life is that I did not continue with my genetic engineering degree. One of the things that I find fascinating is new sources of viable protein and production in these arid and/or depleted countries. Like I said, random.
The food is scientifically designed to meet the needs of severely malnourished children, providing extra fats and proteins and vitamins and apparently helps them digest better - this organization apparently started sending "american" food there in 1997 and found out that the food was making the malnourished kids sicker - so they had scientists design a food nutritionally best for these kids... 50 lbs in 6 months seems like alot - but this kid was 19 lbs and 7 years old, so he probably should weigh even more than that at his age... There's alot of info on the website about the food - we did the rice products tonight but they also do a potato product too. And its all vegetarian, because they were saying over 50% of the world population is vegetarian... interesting cause I didn't know that! right before we went there to pack the food we ate burgers at Five Guys - and two lesbians walking into this bible thumper church my sister belongs to- after we smoked our cigarettes in the car in the parking lot - I'm probably going to be struck by lightening tonight, they are lucky God didn't cave the roof of the church in on us tonight!! hahahah

AP - The owner showed up. I thought she had said his name was Rusty when she was crying on the phone. It is Rascal. And yes she did show, with two kids. They were all really nice. Turns out, it was not the crack house they were evicted from, but a home on a hill above that that is only 2 years old and has grown mold inside the walls and needs to be evacuated/redone. What an awful situation. Rascal is here until she and the kids can get a rental home or move back into their home. I feel so bad for her. Rascal is happy and safe here though and we will enjoy our time with him. ::::I still call him Shortround though::::

And by the way AP - that cat in the picture of my new seating area - she is a one of a kind! The landscaping company that I worked for had a pottery company run by my boss's daughter working out of the same office. They had a factory in Mexico that would make Wendy's own designs and she designed the cat. They decided not to make the cats.... so my cat is the one of a kind proto-type that they made in Mexico... I named her Wendola - which is what we used to call Wendy at work (Wendy, the boss's daughter and pottery company owner) So Wendola has moved with me now 3 times and she's part of the family!!!

I meant that as it was all US - Patti and I... - the five guys burgers, we were the lesbians smoking before we went in - I just meant its a wonder God didn't strike us dead with lightening inside that church while we packed! Not sure what denomination it is, but trust me, they are thumpers for real!! (no offense to anyone here!! for real!!!) God doesn't care who packs the food for the starving kids, right?

Thanks Kaytie - we'd hold hands with you and march right in there too :) and for the record, nobody said anything - My sister introduced us as her sister Karen and her friend Patti - which is fine with me - she is accepting of us as far as she can be - and thats better than how it was 5 years ago - so I'm good with Patti being my "friend"!!
Ohhhh if they only knew AP - hopefully we spread our cooties around well enough that some of those little girls will "catch it" and give their parents a wake up call some day!! There were ALOT of kids around 10-15 years old - I was surprised since it was the 9-11 shift, and because they were so young, but you can't start too early to teach your kids about giving back!

Can I rant about something before I go to bed? I've got a RL friend, and I do use that term loosely, who has been unemployed for way over a year. She *has to work and I want to work, so we've had a deal that if either if either of us hears of anyone hiring, we'll tip the other off. Well, turns out she's been working for a couple of weeks and when she finally called to fill me in, here's what I found out. Have y'all seen the commercials on TV for Lifeline Across America, offering discounted phone services for those on various welfare programs? http://www.lifeline.gov/lifeline_Consumers.html She's working for their call center, taking incoming calls for this plan. Okay, not my ideal job but I'm not too picky so I asked her why she didn't let me know this place was hiring and her answer floored me: "You don't qualify to work here." Well, why the hell not? I'm far more qualified than she is and she'd just finished telling me no experience was required, it was so simplistic. The kicker - the reason I don't qualify? It's part of Obama's stimulus plan and if you aren't on a welfare program or unemployment, they won't hire you. So, basically, I'm helping to fund a phone service I'm not allowed to work for since I'm able to help fund it. Niiiiiiiiice. By the way, she? Is getting to declare bankruptcy *again, but just spent nearly $1500 of her tax return on a new bedroom set because even if she loses her house, it can come with her. *eyeroll* I should link to to JM's blog.
Gotta get to bed - Ang will be here at 10 with Tay - we are going to sneak into her apartment while she's working and put together the dresser she bought for Tay this week, she thinks we are too busy to put it together til next week and she was trying not to be pushy - but I could tell she really wants it done before she is off on Sunday all day - so we're going up there and using the key she gave me when she moved in there to put it together, then when she gets home tomorrow night she'll see it all put together! Hope it makes her day!! I think we might even feed her dinner tomorrow night when she gets off work. She works so hard and doesn't really do much for "fun" other than family stuff, so I hope this makes her smile!!

Beezus and Ramona books? Loved 'em! I related so much to poor, long-suffering Beezus with the annoying kid sister. Those books really stuck with me. I remember when Ramona went down to the cellar and took one bite from each apple stored down there. She said the first bite of apple is the best. Her Mom ended up making lots and lots of applesauce.
I always resented Ramona for being so "bad." I was a good kid like Beezus, and I think Ramona deserved harsher punishment. Hmph.

I loved those books too. Wasn't Freckle Juice one of her books? I don't remember the Beezus and Ramona books but I do remember Beverly cleary books - Loved them.
Generational difference - Beverly Cleary's first book was Henry Huggins.
Henry Huggins was in the third grade. His hair looked like a scrubbing brush and most of his grown-up full teeth were in. Except for having his tonsils out when he was six and breaking his arm falling out of a cherry tree when he was seven, nothing much happened to Henry.
I wish something exciting would happen, Henry often thought.
Well, lots of exciting things are going to happen to Henry! His adventures begin when he brings home Ribsy, a lost, hungry dog with big brown eyes and a taste for ice cream and trouble. Henry is about to discover that almost anything can happen when Ribsy is around!
Henry's family live on Klickitat Street, so Henry is also good friends with Beezus Quimby. When Henry has problems he can always count on Beezus, although he's not quite so sure that he wants Beezus's pesky sister Ramona hanging around.

We didn't have swim lessons :( I guess for spring break there is no swim practice - I kinda remembered on the way there and called but they don't have a recording saying so - just that they aren't available - either on the other line or with a customer. You would think they would say - no practice the week of....
We went to the little airport and saw some planes land and chased some ducks and inquired about helicopter rides :)
15 minutes for $50.00 but I am going to have to call to see if there is an age limit.

I'm a tidy person but that room is my dumping ground, probably since there's no access from inside the house and I can convince myself it's not part of the house. Re: Judy Blume / B Cleary: I introduced my son to Judy Blume maybe in Grade 2 and bought him a set of several of her books, it was so fun to read them with him. Remember Are You There God It's Me Margaret? Well that one didn't come in the pack, I don't think I want to explain to my son what menstruation is just yet.
Has anyone read Our Snowman Had Olive Eyes as a child? I remember that book made me cry. Remember the grandmother putting milk in the eggs to make them fluffy? That stuck with me, I don't know why.
Kristin: when I read you were going to swimming I thought, hmmm, ours was cancelled this week for March Break and then there you were, back from your scenic drive :0) We start up lessons again next week and we've transferred to their new location with is saltwater. The kids are excited!

I loved Are You There God It's Me Margaret? It was my first real introduction to religions other than the Methodist Church I grew up in and the Southern Baptists we looked down on.
Kristin - she's my neighbor. It's an odd relationship in that she is 86 and I'm 41 - my husband calls us fried green matzo balls :)

I think of her a lot and really wonder if she is still alive.
She was a "refugee" from Louisiana - in her 90's and so full of life - and hilarious to boot.
APS put her in a nursing home and I would visit 2 x's a week after spending a few hours a day with her, every day when she was in the shelter. APS made me out to be the bad guy even though I was the only one to come visit and take care of her. They put her on a bus back to NOLA a few months after her being in the nursing home and I never got to say goodbye.
okay, I'm crying now.

AP - What is trashy about a garden? Go for it! Mine is small. Off my back patio so it gets afternoon sun. Probably 8 feet long by 3 deep. I have some blueberry bushes, chives, garlic parsley, sage, rosemary...but no Thyme. I bought some Walla Walla Sweet onion starts and cilantro yesterday and plan to get those in today. If I can get my buns out there. Feeling really lazy today.

Kaytie, there are some people around here who get all worked up over gardens, clotheslines and such being in view. Personally, I love to see clothes on a clothesline, too.
AP: we had a Toronto home on the news recently for their interpretation of "art" on their front lawn. It included many old, stacked tires filled with dirt as "planters".
I think a garden on the side of your house would be A-okay in my books!
Clotheslines aren't allowed in my neighbourhood. When these houses were built, it actually stated so in the paperwork. All subsequent owners are bound by it. We can use the umbrella-style ones only, not the ones posted from one side of the yard to the other.
It will probably be changed because it's "greener" to dry clothes that way. My neighbour already does dry her clothes that way and I could care less. I can only see into her yard from my second story and don't think it's my business. Plus they're great neighbours.
Ck - "I wonder if JM will give her Kenyan children McDonald's names?" - made me wheeze!

Re: Shortround picture: he was actually awake the entire time, but the dining rooms at The Keg are quite dark, and so the flash on my BlackBerry was so bright and he blinked in every single picture I took of him. Seriously I took about 15 of them in a row and they all look like that one.
No news on the naming front, only now they are stuck on the middle name. Sigh.
My parents live in a quiet middle class neighborhood in a very small town in South Alabama. Their neighborhood does not have any restrictions on things like clothes lines or other silly things. Mom's next door neighbor had to get a new toilet, and she put her old toilet by the road for the city trash pick-up to take it away. Well, Mom's other next door neighbor, who considers herself sophisticated, complained to the toilet neighbor about the toilet because sophisticated neighbor was having a political fundraiser and didn't want people thinking she lived in a crappy neighborhood where people had old toilets by the road. So toilet neighbor put a garbage bag over to hide it from sensitive eyes.
I'd have filled it with dirt and turned it into a planter, just to be spiteful.
FT. I have a couple of retractable clotheslines. They're mounted to a power pole in my yard and I stretch them across the yard and hook them to my house when I want to use them but then they disappear when I'm done. Clothes drying on a line just feels homey to me.
The "art" stuff, though, not so much. Code enforcement allows some of it here (as much as you want behind a privacy fence), but it's got to be semi-tasteful and not resembling a junkyard. There's a guy in Orlando who has been jailed for what you're talking about.
I wish I had a clothesline. Love the smell and crispness of line dried bed sheets.
Husband rigs one up every spring and fall to air out the quilts. Nummy.
AP: We don't have a dryer in Portugal so I line-dry when I'm there (like I will this summer). Line-dried clothing smells so-o-o good. My backyard is too full of patio stuff and swings and sandboxes to put up a line (yard is not that big), but I've never heard of a retractable line. Interesting.
I grew up not far from where that house is. We had some ecclectic neighbours, including one fellow down the street who was cited numerous times for piling up garbage and annoying the neighbours out of spite. This man was mentally ill which we all suspected but were vindicated when he was eventually shot dead by police as he charged at them and would not stop despite them having their guns drawn. He was killed outside of a 7-11 store and the clerk had called police because he was causing a ruckus in the store.
A little OT, I know.
Ecclectic neighbourhoods are cute and quaint and all, but people have to realize that expressing their artistic interests is fine but not at the expense of their neighbours peaceful existence you know? Also it affects the value of the neighbouring houses. I would not want to live next to "tire-planter" people. I'd complain about those tires, too!

Well. While I don't like it, I'd be okay with the blue trim and stuff. The tires used as planters? Not so much. Not like that. Around here you occasionally see a tire painted white and used as a planter but never stacked and still black. The rock thing...ehh. That's sort of subjective, I think. Why can't people just look around them and try to be considerate of their neighbors and what they may see and like?

I got my meds for my migraines yesterday and amazingly enough got to use them within about 3 hours of picking them up GRRRRR Good news is they worked wonderfully and nipped it in the bud however I did get to spend about 6 hours feeling like I was incredibly stoned.
I did however wake up this morning with an amazing amount of energy and have gotten into this massive cleaning kick. I have the stepish son outside picking up and push mowing the yard....it is one of those manual ones not one that has any power to it...I wouldnt let a 9 year old do that LOL. My daughter is recovering from her hangover and is going to get the kitchen kicked out. I have laundry going and just got the bedroom picked up and vacuumed. Then I am going to go out front and sweep the walk way and get all the yuck off of it. Hopefully we wont run out of steam and will be able to get the rest of the house done today too but hey there is a week of spring break so we will be good to go :)
Google retractable clotheslines...I got mine at Lowe's but most hardware stores should have them. They won't hold the weight of a regular one - a wet quilt might be too much but they work fine for sheets and all. Plus, once you're done it's nothing but a neat looking little round box mounted on a tree or something.
AP: I don't know what the rock pile looked like but they did move it to their backyard. And the tires are on the sidewalk (which does not belong to the homeowner anyway) and up the walkway to the front of the house. I don't know, just looks ugly. I don't agree with the commenters who say is breeds West Nile Virus. Seriously people, those are empty tires, not tires filled with dirt. It takes away from valid arguments to have those tires removed.
Growing up, we had a tire in the middle of our front lawn. My father had made cuts in it from the centre out to make "petals" and it was painted white and was filled with dirt and used as a planter. Nobody ever complained about it. It's just that these stacked tires are just plain ugly, and look haphazard. I have no trouble with what colour the porch is painted, or the sun cutout.
There are many houses in that neighbourhood which are unique, and don't use grass for example, but have like a wild brush look to them (more "green" than grass which uses too much water) and so on. I'm okay with that. My mother's next-door neighbour's front is like that, all rocks and fern-like plants and wild-growing stuff but it is maintained, you know?
