Well, I just learned a very important FB lesson. Never assume. I have a fairly new friend I got from a gaming forum...nice woman...we've exchanged little notes about our farms and such. I kept looking at her picture, which is 2 women, one appearing older than the other, and a baby. So, I asked her if that was her, her daughter and grandbaby. Well, she's 33, and that's her best friend and her niece. Fuck me...lol.

Good morning, lovelies. I am debating on taking Muliette to the doc today, because I saw some blood in her poo again last night and her face looks like the before picture in a Proactive ad. I can just not afford the formula they are going to say to start her on. I think I am going to bitch at my insurance company this morning to see what they say about the formula. I know they covered it in the past, but now they are saying they won't.
Mulie - I would call the insurance company again for sure, but if that formula is what the doctor says will help your baby keep blood out of her stool, then by God I would find a way to afford it.
Mulie - I agree with Deb, I'd figure out whatever you have to do to get it for her. Sorry little Muliette is having such a rough go! That's no fun for any of you. :(

Well last week she gave us quite a scare. Her incisions areas were extremely red and she was itchy like nobodys business. Took her in worried that it could be an infection. Doctor said it wasnt an infection but he couldnt explain the extreme redness and itching.
My incredibly smart husband suggested it could be a reaction to the vicodine so I had her stop taking it. Within two days she was no longer so red or itchy so he was right on the money.
Other then that she is doing awesome. Healing is going great. She is quite happy with the size that she is right now and is so extatic that some of the clothes she had before that didnt fit are now fitting perfectly.I will have to see about finding a before pic and get an after pic just so you all can see how much more proportionate she is now.
EL I am tellin ya I have been so ticked off lately because of having so many issues. In mean shit first it was no internet due to peeps not paying the bill...then my power connection went ppppfffftttt....then Mikala's laptop decided it didnt like the internet anymore.....FRUSTRATING!!!!
Oh and I have to leave in a while because Mikala has a follow up appt today
She hasnt had back pain since she had the surgery. She has only had one headache. I think I can safely say that this surgery has already impacted her life for the better.

That is good to hear. And good that insurance companies cover this. In years past they never would have. Think of how much better she is *because of the procedure.

Our weather has been freakish the last few weeks. The week the laptop shit on me we pushed 100 degree weather. Then we went back to 70's and 80's....well this weekend will once again be pushing the 100's....I HATE AFRICA HOT (trying to imitate my friend)

So funny story. We went camping this last weekend and I was a good kid and remembered to find the SPF 50 sunblock so I wouldnt burn to a crisp. Or maybe I should say I was disappointed in my interpretation of her gravy recipe. Then again gravy and I have a love/hate relationship. I like it but have great difficutly making it.

Melissa - piccatta is pounded thin chicken boobs, dredged in flour, fried in olive oil/butter. Removed. Then add some lemon juice, white wine (and/or chicken broth) to the pan and scrape up all the bits and let it reduce down a bit. Add some capers. Few slices of lemon. Throw the chicken back in and let it do its thing for a couple minutes. Remove, serve over pasta, or rice, or just plain. You can also add garlic and/or sliced mushrooms iffen you want.

Really, it shouldn't be difficult to make gravy. For some reason I have a hard time getting the milk/cream:flour ratio right. Maybe I shouldn't eyeballing it and I should just measure or something.
Well, AP, you made me laugh, because it sounds kind of dumb of me when you lay it out like that. You forgot to mention the Ugg boots and the ridiculously expensive Phil&Teds stroller...
This is the 3rd kid that has had this problem, so I already know what the doctor is going to say, and I have already been doing all that nonsense (eliminating dairy, eggs, soy and nuts from my diet). The blood itself is very minimal and looks almost like a speck of blood you would see in your snot after you blow your nose (not a pretty picture, I know). I have seen the equivalent of 2 specks in 3-4 days, so I have been on alert for more, or symptoms that it's something else (ie: fever, vomiting, etc).
If it were massive amounts of blood I would be freaking the eff out. I am just praying that it doesn't end up being more because it is difficult to cook all my food from scratch, bottle feed, pump milk, and care for a home and 3 kids. So it's not just the money, it's everything that goes along with it.
I, of course, could find a way to afford the formula and I have been checking ebay and craigslist just in case. I took her in today just to get the problem documented, so I can try and get the insurance to cover the formula if the problem continues. The formula is almost double the cost of traditional formula and the *problem with babies, is that they just keep consuming more and more, so while the formula would fit in the budget shot term, it would kill us long term.

It does make more sense when you lay it out the way you have now, because I'd venture a guess there were more than just AP (me included in that number) who were seeing it the way she did.
And the only way I can make decent gravy is to measure. I use a recipe from Betty Crocker's New Cookbook that uses 2 tablespoons of fat (butter, oil, etc.) to 2 tablespoons of flour and 1 cup of liquid (broth, water, etc.) and seasonings to taste. If I use milk I use 1/2 milk and 1/2 broth or water.
Mulie. With regard to having the poop analyzed. Kind of ruined the first answer for me.

I never measure gravy. Throw some flour in the oil/butter/whatever leftover from frying and some salt and pepper. Eyeball to see how thick it is and let it cook down and then just slowly pour milk in, stirring constantly and letting cook until it's as thick as I want. Done.
I don't make a whole lot from scratch. I do make crockpot yogurt weekly and made muffins the other day, but other than that everything comes from a box or packet. No wonder I've gained 20lbs in the past year.

AP- go to that year of crockpotting site or whatever it's called and search yogurt. That's how I made mine, although I did end up adding a package of sugar free pudding in when you stir the yogurt in,just to thicken it up. I had better luck with 1% milk than 2%, oddly enough. Very, very easy, just a matter of timing.
Maybe that's my issue-I add the flour and then just dump an equal amount of milk in there. Most times it ends up too thin so I throw another handful of flour in there. That begins the vicious cycle. At the end of it all I have 5 pounds of gravy.

Melissa - Normally a cast iron pan, but just because if I'm frying something like hamburger or chicken fried steak or whatever to make gravy, that's what it'd be in. You have to let that flour/butter/oil mixture cook down a little bit (stirring it all the time) to make like a really smooth paste and you need to make sure you have enough when you start to make all the gravy becuse it's always hard to stir flour in later. For stuff like chicken/turkey gravy where you don't make it with milk, same thing, only with broth, not milk. I would say I add way more liquid than flour.
Sorry to keep buggin' you about gravy RiM! When I've made my gravy in my cast iron it ended up tasting like metal which was not yummy. What did I do wrong?

AP - Great Value packets are used here regularly, too, but sometimes I just got to have it like mama used to make.
Melissa - I usually use just a regular pan. Although I do *own an iron skillet. I should have also added that I usually double the amts, depending on how many folks I'm feeding.
Melissa -- Hmmm, I don't know... How well seasoned is your castiron? You can make it in any pan, though, including like a le creuset or nonstick or just regular old stainless steel pan, whatever.

We have it once a year with prime rib, usually for Christmas dinner. No gravy with it though. AP, Yorkshire pudding is good. Hard to explain the taste though. Just yum. When your prime rib is done, you take it out to rest, pour the batter in with the drippings from the meat and it all bakes together, but does not come out greasy tasting. No, I seriously had to take a freshly produced diaper with a *speck of blood in it to the hosp. See my previous doc just took my word for it, but this doctor wants it analyzed with in 15 minutes of it's "arrival." They couldn't just scrape the bloody part off. Nope. I got Hunter out of bed, all 3 kids buckled in, drove up to the hosp, got all 3 out, 2 buckled into the stroller, power walked through the parking lot, through the hosp, handed over the diaper, just to be told it wasn't a large enough sample and it was too soaked in. Their solution? Line every diaper with plastic wrap until I finally get one that has blood in it.
Kaytie-Glad I could make you laugh! I used to always say that to my parents after a drama or chorus or dance show in high school. It was the first thing that came to my mind.
When I make gravy, I make it with milk and it turns out awesome. I add a little milk, a little flower, a little milk, a little flower. I keep it on the runny side, because it always thickens up as it cools. I have also used white wine or bisquick, just for something different. I haven't made any gravy in ages though.
I'm sorry that Muliette is having problems. My son had reflux-like issues when he was a couple of months old. After having all sorts of tests etc he ended up on Nutramigen(sp). He finally outgrew it. Hopefully your doctor will be able to determine what's causing her issues.

Crockpot yogurt- use the Crockpot 365 site's recipe. Add vanilla pudding when you add the yogurt cultures. I purchased some ziplock containers that are about 1 cup in size. When I scoop out the yogurt I put a little frozen fruit on the bottom and scoop the yogurt into individual containers.
Melissa, was he on Nutramigen his entire infancy or was he able to switch to something cheaper as he grew? That's what Hunter was on for 2 weeks while I cleared my diet out and we were able to resume breast feeding. The amount of blood her had was far greater than Muliette's. The potential damage to their intestinal tract scares me. Has he had any tummy troubles as he's gotten older?

My poor baby boy has been drinking soy milk and looked like a miniature Skeletor. I just weighed him today and he's gained over 10 lbs and 4 inches in 10 months on the stuff. I just started getting raw, fresh goat's milk from a farmer lady for $6 a gallon and have switched the whole family over. I have not been chancing the baby having a reaction to it, so I am skipping it for now. I am hopeful that since Hunter hasn't had a problem with it, that I will be able to use it without a problem to the baby. I want to clean my diet totally out before I add it in just so I can gauge any reactions.
Mulie-he was only on Nutramigen for maybe 6 months. That was 9 years ago so I'm a little cloudy on the exact details of that time period. He hasn't had any digestive/stomach problems since then. He never had bloody diapers, he would just spew after he'd have a bottle.
I thought that was the case, Robin, but my goat milk lady said that she has been buying cultures, because she heard that the cultures in commercial yogurts may not be strong enough. She hasn't tried making any yet though and she bought a yogurt maker.
Yeah, Melissa, she has only spit up a few times, and all but one time have been through her nose, so she is refluxing and having colic symptoms. The *funny part is, when she has had a screaming episode (this has only happened maybe 4 times) there are on instances of blood, but when she had blood last night, she was in an awesome mood all day and night, smiling, laughing, baby-talking, and just being a sweet thing. That's why it's difficult to gauge what the actual problem it.
Christy, Thanks for the references! I was just reading some WAP stuff this morning and everything they say I should be eating, sounds like exactly like the foods I am currently trying to avoid. The baby seemed fine with my diet until late last week until I ate, like, 3 or 4 hard boiled eggs, so I thought that might have been what was bothering her. I did learn that goat's milk is w/out folic acid and low in vitamin b12.

Margaret, I don't really know if Elisabeth "dumped" us for certain. I believe what happened was that her computer monitor died (I think) and someone was going to help them fix it and couldn't. No money in the budget for a new one, she lost her internet at home (and I would venture to guess at Chris' too, since the computer wasn't working) and she is not able to load OD from her phone. She is still able to get on things like Twitter (where I keep up with her) and I think someone said they have seen her at MWOP. She always tweets me and I should have probably been passing along her updates, but it seriously didn't occur to me. It was one of those things where I would read things on twitter and forget they weren't on OD too.
When AP expressed her feeling on the situation, someone so very graciously created themselves an anon twitter account for the sole purpose of telling Elisabeth that something was said. She responded to that person that she adored the Daisies and she was beyond grateful to everything that was done, it's just that she can't get onto the site. I imagine that she *could send emails, but, hey, what do I know?

Good morning, lovelies. I am debating on taking Muliette to the doc today, because I saw some blood in her poo again last night and her face looks like the before picture in a Proactive ad. I can just not afford the formula they are going to say to start her on. I think I am going to bitch at my insurance company this morning to see what they say about the formula. I know they covered it in the past, but now they are saying they won't.
Mulie - I would call the insurance company again for sure, but if that formula is what the doctor says will help your baby keep blood out of her stool, then by God I would find a way to afford it.
Mulie - I agree with Deb, I'd figure out whatever you have to do to get it for her. Sorry little Muliette is having such a rough go! That's no fun for any of you. :(

Well last week she gave us quite a scare. Her incisions areas were extremely red and she was itchy like nobodys business. Took her in worried that it could be an infection. Doctor said it wasnt an infection but he couldnt explain the extreme redness and itching.
My incredibly smart husband suggested it could be a reaction to the vicodine so I had her stop taking it. Within two days she was no longer so red or itchy so he was right on the money.
Other then that she is doing awesome. Healing is going great. She is quite happy with the size that she is right now and is so extatic that some of the clothes she had before that didnt fit are now fitting perfectly.I will have to see about finding a before pic and get an after pic just so you all can see how much more proportionate she is now.
So glad to hear she is doing well. Does her back feel so much better too?

She hasnt had back pain since she had the surgery. She has only had one headache. I think I can safely say that this surgery has already impacted her life for the better.

So funny story. We went camping this last weekend and I was a good kid and remembered to find the SPF 50 sunblock so I wouldnt burn to a crisp. Well the first night I discovered that I had burned the shit out of myself. Next morning I looked at the bottle only to discover that the stupid stuff expired in 02/07. Let me tell ya I have not been this colored since I was a child. Something happened in my late teens where I went from having the skin of an Native American to being straight up Irish LOL

We went to Bedrock campground up Fall Creek....it is an awesome place with some of the most fabulous pools for swimming and rock jumping.

I also kind of agree with AP about PW. I've tried a few of her recipes and I haven't been in love with any of them. Maybe it's operator error. I was really disappointed in her gravy recipe. Or maybe I should say I was disappointed in my interpretation of her gravy recipe. Then again gravy and I have a love/hate relationship. I like it but have great difficutly making it.

Melissa - how many children do you have?
Melissa - piccatta is pounded thin chicken boobs, dredged in flour, fried in olive oil/butter. Removed. Then add some lemon juice, white wine (and/or chicken broth) to the pan and scrape up all the bits and let it reduce down a bit. Add some capers. Few slices of lemon. Throw the chicken back in and let it do its thing for a couple minutes. Remove, serve over pasta, or rice, or just plain. You can also add garlic and/or sliced mushrooms iffen you want.
Oh. And butter. Forgot to say add butter to the lemon juice/wine/broth mixture.

Really, it shouldn't be difficult to make gravy. For some reason I have a hard time getting the milk/cream:flour ratio right. Maybe I shouldn't eyeballing it and I should just measure or something.
Well, AP, you made me laugh, because it sounds kind of dumb of me when you lay it out like that. You forgot to mention the Ugg boots and the ridiculously expensive Phil&Teds stroller...
This is the 3rd kid that has had this problem, so I already know what the doctor is going to say, and I have already been doing all that nonsense (eliminating dairy, eggs, soy and nuts from my diet). The blood itself is very minimal and looks almost like a speck of blood you would see in your snot after you blow your nose (not a pretty picture, I know). I have seen the equivalent of 2 specks in 3-4 days, so I have been on alert for more, or symptoms that it's something else (ie: fever, vomiting, etc).
If it were massive amounts of blood I would be freaking the eff out. I am just praying that it doesn't end up being more because it is difficult to cook all my food from scratch, bottle feed, pump milk, and care for a home and 3 kids. So it's not just the money, it's everything that goes along with it.
I, of course, could find a way to afford the formula and I have been checking ebay and craigslist just in case. I took her in today just to get the problem documented, so I can try and get the insurance to cover the formula if the problem continues. The formula is almost double the cost of traditional formula and the *problem with babies, is that they just keep consuming more and more, so while the formula would fit in the budget shot term, it would kill us long term.
And, I am also an idiot that can't do math in the middle of the night and miscalculated the cost of the goat's milk. It was *only $14 a gallon. ;-)

And the only way I can make decent gravy is to measure. I use a recipe from Betty Crocker's New Cookbook that uses 2 tablespoons of fat (butter, oil, etc.) to 2 tablespoons of flour and 1 cup of liquid (broth, water, etc.) and seasonings to taste. If I use milk I use 1/2 milk and 1/2 broth or water.

I never measure gravy. Throw some flour in the oil/butter/whatever leftover from frying and some salt and pepper. Eyeball to see how thick it is and let it cook down and then just slowly pour milk in, stirring constantly and letting cook until it's as thick as I want. Done.
I don't make a whole lot from scratch. I do make crockpot yogurt weekly and made muffins the other day, but other than that everything comes from a box or packet.
No wonder I've gained 20lbs in the past year.

AP- go to that year of crockpotting site or whatever it's called and search yogurt. That's how I made mine, although I did end up adding a package of sugar free pudding in when you stir the yogurt in,just to thicken it up. I had better luck with 1% milk than 2%, oddly enough. Very, very easy, just a matter of timing.
Maybe that's my issue-I add the flour and then just dump an equal amount of milk in there. Most times it ends up too thin so I throw another handful of flour in there. That begins the vicious cycle. At the end of it all I have 5 pounds of gravy.
Do you use a cast iron pan or just a regular one?
We rarely eat gravy. When we do it's from a jar.

Melissa - Normally a cast iron pan, but just because if I'm frying something like hamburger or chicken fried steak or whatever to make gravy, that's what it'd be in. You have to let that flour/butter/oil mixture cook down a little bit (stirring it all the time) to make like a really smooth paste and you need to make sure you have enough when you start to make all the gravy becuse it's always hard to stir flour in later. For stuff like chicken/turkey gravy where you don't make it with milk, same thing, only with broth, not milk. I would say I add way more liquid than flour.

Margaret!! OMG! I love Yorkshire pudding! We have it once a year with prime rib, usually for Christmas dinner. No gravy with it though.
AP, Yorkshire pudding is good. Hard to explain the taste though. Just yum. When your prime rib is done, you take it out to rest, pour the batter in with the drippings from the meat and it all bakes together, but does not come out greasy tasting. I put Worchestershire sauce on mine.

No, I seriously had to take a freshly produced diaper with a *speck of blood in it to the hosp. See my previous doc just took my word for it, but this doctor wants it analyzed with in 15 minutes of it's "arrival." They couldn't just scrape the bloody part off. Nope. I got Hunter out of bed, all 3 kids buckled in, drove up to the hosp, got all 3 out, 2 buckled into the stroller, power walked through the parking lot, through the hosp, handed over the diaper, just to be told it wasn't a large enough sample and it was too soaked in. Their solution? Line every diaper with plastic wrap until I finally get one that has blood in it.

When I make gravy, I make it with milk and it turns out awesome. I add a little milk, a little flower, a little milk, a little flower. I keep it on the runny side, because it always thickens up as it cools. I have also used white wine or bisquick, just for something different. I haven't made any gravy in ages though.

I'm sorry that Muliette is having problems. My son had reflux-like issues when he was a couple of months old. After having all sorts of tests etc he ended up on Nutramigen(sp). He finally outgrew it. Hopefully your doctor will be able to determine what's causing her issues.

Crockpot yogurt- use the Crockpot 365 site's recipe. Add vanilla pudding when you add the yogurt cultures.
I purchased some ziplock containers that are about 1 cup in size. When I scoop out the yogurt I put a little frozen fruit on the bottom and scoop the yogurt into individual containers.
My recipe for gravy?

Melissa, was he on Nutramigen his entire infancy or was he able to switch to something cheaper as he grew? That's what Hunter was on for 2 weeks while I cleared my diet out and we were able to resume breast feeding. The amount of blood her had was far greater than Muliette's. The potential damage to their intestinal tract scares me. Has he had any tummy troubles as he's gotten older?

Margaret, I have never made the Yorkshire pudding in muffin cups. I should try it.
With the yogurt...do you all buy cultures? I want to make some goat's milk yogurt, but wanted to make sure th milk didn't taste like ass first.
Mulie - any yogurt that says "active cultures" will work. I had the best results with Greek God honey flavor. It takes a lot of milk, though.
My poor baby boy has been drinking soy milk and looked like a miniature Skeletor. I just weighed him today and he's gained over 10 lbs and 4 inches in 10 months on the stuff. I just started getting raw, fresh goat's milk from a farmer lady for $6 a gallon and have switched the whole family over. I have not been chancing the baby having a reaction to it, so I am skipping it for now. I am hopeful that since Hunter hasn't had a problem with it, that I will be able to use it without a problem to the baby. I want to clean my diet totally out before I add it in just so I can gauge any reactions.

Mulie-he was only on Nutramigen for maybe 6 months. That was 9 years ago so I'm a little cloudy on the exact details of that time period. He hasn't had any digestive/stomach problems since then. He never had bloody diapers, he would just spew after he'd have a bottle.
I thought that was the case, Robin, but my goat milk lady said that she has been buying cultures, because she heard that the cultures in commercial yogurts may not be strong enough. She hasn't tried making any yet though and she bought a yogurt maker.

Yeah, Melissa, she has only spit up a few times, and all but one time have been through her nose, so she is refluxing and having colic symptoms. The *funny part is, when she has had a screaming episode (this has only happened maybe 4 times) there are on instances of blood, but when she had blood last night, she was in an awesome mood all day and night, smiling, laughing, baby-talking, and just being a sweet thing. That's why it's difficult to gauge what the actual problem it.

Christy, Thanks for the references! I was just reading some WAP stuff this morning and everything they say I should be eating, sounds like exactly like the foods I am currently trying to avoid. The baby seemed fine with my diet until late last week until I ate, like, 3 or 4 hard boiled eggs, so I thought that might have been what was bothering her.
I did learn that goat's milk is w/out folic acid and low in vitamin b12.

Margaret, I don't really know if Elisabeth "dumped" us for certain. I believe what happened was that her computer monitor died (I think) and someone was going to help them fix it and couldn't. No money in the budget for a new one, she lost her internet at home (and I would venture to guess at Chris' too, since the computer wasn't working) and she is not able to load OD from her phone. She is still able to get on things like Twitter (where I keep up with her) and I think someone said they have seen her at MWOP. She always tweets me and I should have probably been passing along her updates, but it seriously didn't occur to me. It was one of those things where I would read things on twitter and forget they weren't on OD too.
When AP expressed her feeling on the situation, someone so very graciously created themselves an anon twitter account for the sole purpose of telling Elisabeth that something was said. She responded to that person that she adored the Daisies and she was beyond grateful to everything that was done, it's just that she can't get onto the site. I imagine that she *could send emails, but, hey, what do I know?
Here's the latest on Chris from twitter:
"Well, it's official. Chris going to live in mom's yard in the singlewide as soon as we can swing down pmt. I just HAVE to go back to work..8 months of paying all his expenses AND ours after cutting my income so I could care for him 24/7....has left us SO in the hole. I can't remember the last time I had to (gulp)..job search. Chris is very sad but he knows we have stretched what we have TO the limit. He's trying to keep spirits up by making jokes about "trailer life". Sent out an email saying he wanted a toilet bowl planter & an old firebird up on blocks as housewarming gifts! I <3 that dude, truly."
Dammit, I go and run and errand, and all of these people show up

It'a all good, Deb. When I went back and reread what I said, I was not at all clear. I am kind of laughing about it, because I think I sounded kind of douche-y about it this morning. When I am typing with one hand, I try and keep it as short as possible, but that didn't really work out too well for me this morning. Oopsie!

I was going to make some for Hunter last year after he turned one and bought everything for it, but never got around to it and discovered the goat's milk and have been very happy with it. I have cut nuts out of my diet for now, but they will probably be some of the first things I add back in. I am just happy that I don't have so cut out wheat or corn like some other mommies I have read about. Now *that would really suck.
