CK: Mangia-cake I believe was a term invented by Italian immigrants. It means cake-eaters. As in people who can't cook so they eat crappy store-bought cake and such.
Joke: What's a Canadian 7-course meal? A six-pack and a twinkie.
I guess some of the other Mediterranean-area Europeans adopted "mangia-cake" to refer to any dish deemed unworthy and below our outstanding ;0) cooking. So when my dad uses mangia-cake that's what he means. My oldest is not a mangia-cake (despite being Canadian-born) because he really enjoys Portuguese cooking like cod, sardines and such. My little one hates hates most ethnic food I make. He's happiest with a cheeseburger in one hand and a Coke in the other. Thus, he is a mangia-cake. Does not appreciate good food. Makes it hard to eat out at interesting places. Trust me, we've tried. Turns up his nose at Thai food, Vietnamese, Indian (including samosas), Chinese (well he'll eat fast-food chinese but not authentic), you get the picture.
I make my own burgers from scratch. At the beginning of BBQ season, I'll to to a Portuguese butcher (surprise, surprise) and pick a nice piece of beef, have them weigh it and then trim it, grind it up for me. I'll use that with all my fixings to make up fresh and healthy beef burgers which I will vacuum seal and freeze for use during the summer. Despite the fact that these are homemade from top beef and using only ingredients I cut myself, he will not touch a burger. On principal.
was closing up shop to go to bed and it sounded like rain outside, well LM was playing in his sandbox earlier, so I went outside to put the lid on....its hailing.
Family Day is Dalton McGuinty's brain child. It was primarily, I believe, a way to break up these awful winter days where we go such a long stretch with no stat or anything. The weather and little sunlight doesn't help. So, Family Day was born. It's meant literally to stress the importance of family, and doing something together. Of course not everyone will, and I'm pretty sure a lot of places stay open but have to pay their employees double pay like during other stat holidays.
Family Day caused enormous problems for the school year. Since school starts the Tuesday after Labour day and ends the last day of June or sooner, this year that would've given us only 192 days of school. Since the school year HAS to be 194 days long (that's what I get paid for, 194 days of work), the 2 days had to happen somewhere. So this year my school board has us come 2 days during the week before Labour Day, and use up 2 of our allotted Professional Activity (PA) days before school even started. School Boards do not have the authority to alter the # of days in a school year, only the Ministry of Education can do that. I think most teachers would've taken a 2-day paycut to have school just start the Tuesday after Labour Day and end on June 30 but it was not an option.
Next year, between the day after Labour Day and the last day of June, we have 193 possible days of school. Meaning they'll have to get that day from somewhere, and it will likely be before Labour Day again. So Family Day is good, but caused some logistical problems where the school year was concerned.
CK, it's obvious you love your dad but I see what you mean about how he may enjoy being in NC more. Plus, it might be easier on your nerves. ;-)
FT, they were wearing turbans but no kirpans and were wearing Western clothing. Both were young, maybe mid-20's and besides the hand-holding, which was being done almost surreptitiously - definitely not blatant and openly, there was just that "something" about how one would lean against the other while shopping. At one point, I was behind them in a line while the hand holding was going on and one was caressing the other's hand while he held it. Out in the open, they'd let go. Lol, I was way too nosy about these two, I guess. Does it still sound cultural to you? It may be but it definitely amused me, if not.
Stat = Statutory holiday. It just means a day set aside to commemorate or remember something (like in some provinces, Remembrance Day is a stat but not in Ontario... Labour Day, Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Victoria Day, Thanksgiving, I know I missed some but you get the idea).
I didn't watch the opening ceremonies live but I gather something went wrong, or didn't happen (one of the torches or something?). I've watched little recaps here and there but not the whole thing. Did you like it? Haven't heard to much about it either way.
We have four days of teacher prep/workshop before labor day. School starts the day after. They're always fussing with our calendar.
Some years we get two weeks and Christmas, and some only one week. A while back (don't know how long) each local school district decided on the number of school days, and has to have that many days every year. They chose from within a range of number of days that the State Board of Education set.
My post about school should have said sometime we get 2 weeks and christmas and sometimes 1 1/2 weeks. Depends on when Labor Day falls (early or late).
AP: Hmmm, could be. I'm certainly not saying there can't be gays in the Sikh community. And it does sound like there was a little sneaking around or that kind of behaviour. Could be.... Like I said I didn't see it and you obviously saw or sensed something so I guess there was, especially the way you describe it. You don't get many young men wearing the traditional top and pants here, and not a lot of boys wear turbans although I do still see this. Mostly older men. I guess like other cultures eventually things get dropped. I guess it depends on how long their families have lived here, i.e. some of their parents would've have been born here but some would have been immigrants. Interesting...
CK: Ug, I would hate them messing with the school year any more than they already have. Some schools here are year-round (Roberta Bondar Public for example). They still have 194 days of school, but they don't get one long huge break. So they school for 6 weeks, off for 1, on for 5, off for 2, whatever, something like that. The only teachers I've ever seen in favour of that are teachers who don't have kids. Since each school sets their own schedule, chances are my school and my kids' school wouldn't line up.
Hey wouldn't that be fun, having different holidays than my kids? Yeah, that's why I became a teacher, to be away from my kids even more than I already am. I'd change schools if that ever happened, or else put my kids in the school I'm at. Although travelling during off-season sounds appealing, and inexpensive!
Had treatment today, and we're gonna change the schedule again. More meds that make me sick.. I was heavily picked on for my southern accent, which I've always had, by a friend tonight. And people can't cut me a break at all, and just lay off my ass.
Kay, I wish I could give you that hug in person. I'm not even a huggy sort but I would for you in a heartbeat. Now, I'm going to the new post with this but wanted it to be here, too.
Everyone is welcome! The only real rules here are no spamming shit and no posting personal addresses, phone numbers or other similar info. I don't need that kind of stress. That's it, although it could change if someone gets creative or something. If you don't like what is said here, you can: 1) Say so; 2) Hold it in and stew on it; 3. Address it privately to the person who said it; 4) Snark about it to your friends; 5) Leave. Don't bother me with it, I don't care and I won't get involved. I might, however, talk about you behind your back or post your email/message to me on here. *grins*
Them's the rules...all of them.
Have fun!

What's the idea behind "Family Day"?

My father won't eat my homemade burgers I mean. My sons will, even the mangia-cake one.

OMG - love the mangia cake term and explanation. Sort of a different kind of food snob?
Family Day is a great idea - what's a "stat" holiday?
What did you think of the Olympics Opening Ceremony?

FT - I loved it - you should have heard me going on about it here.
I'm just wondering how much was truly authentic, and how much was what we would call "Hollywood".
Y'all, I'm gone for the night, I think. I'll catch up tomorrow but love the mangia-cake thing. How is "mangia" pronounced?
I may be back, I may not. If not, sweet dreams to you all. :-)

Night AP.

FT - good info. Glad you're here. I'm off to bed.
Primal Scream!! Okay, now I can sleep.
Me too. Suddenly I'm tired.
Goodnight, everyone.
Hey guys.. bad day. Need a hug.
LFoB - I'm still here - what's up. Hug....
Hugs for LFob and anyone else who needs one.
And sweet dreams all

I wonder how anyone see's someone in pain, and upset about a day and sets out to make it even worse. :(
Thanks for letting me just get that out there, I think I'm gonna try and sleep it off.
<3 everyone here.
