Controversy day?

Things have been pretty tame as of late. We have discussed spanking with weapons. We have discussed having  more kids then you can afford or adequately provide for. We have talked about women presidents. What else is there?

We could discuss how politicians allow their religious views or backers to control or influence how they vote. We could discuss how special interests and pocket liners are slowly ruining our nation.

The Preamble to the Constitution of the United States of America ready:

"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence,[1] promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

Is this still true today or  has power and money taken over?

As un-politically involved as I am I'd like to agree with Margaret. I think that power and money have taken over.

Continuing from previous thread-I don't think that her hair looks bad. To me it's definitely an improvement over the other picture she had posted. But what do I know because I don't regularly color my hair. I'm not a stylist/colorist nor do I play one on tv.

I disagree, Margaret. We've waged war against two of those nations and looking at probable war with more. To elect a woman, at least *now or in the foreseeable future, would be a grave mistake, imo. How would it ever be a good idea to elect a president that those we are warring against would have no respect for and not be willing to listen to? And then, if we think oof the possible retribution it could entail, if we have a woman telling them what to do in their own country...?

Power and money has always been a factor, I think, since the beginning and in *any government. What I feel has taken over is a mix of political-correctness and an enormous lapse in morals.

See, Melissa, I agree again. And I hate her hair in those modeling pics -- looks like a ratty-ass mess, dry and bad color, and I thought it looked shiny and healthy in the 'after' pic of her color. I wouldn't want my hair that shade either, so I get that she was mad. But just in the big scheme of things, really? It's worth 18 gazillion words of ranting? But I'm getting old and crotchety, so what do I know? I think she is a very beautiful woman, and a smokin' body for popping out seven kids.

I think power and money have taken over, too. I think the Constitution is only used when it's nice and convenient.

LOL Melissa I have given up on coloring my hair...the gray wants to take over and sure I can keep wasting money on color but it only makes a difference for about 3 days. I think it is rather flattering on her but I am not the one that has to live in it.

And while I'm at it (gotta talk before real like and eye crap takes over my day!), y'all know I'm no Christian but I was raised around it and I'm so stinking tired of people griping about things like the Ten Commandments in public buildings. Admittedly, I could do without Commandments 1 and 3, if they were just called The Ten Good Rules To Live By" and a few adjustments made to 1 and 3, would anyone object? Wouldn't it be a better nation if we all *did live by at least 8 of them? But oh, no, it's not politically correct and "we" just can't stop being offended by 1 and 3 since they aren't alllllll about us personally (me, me, me society), so they have to go.

This may be very un-PC but I think that a lot of the ammendments to the constitution have done more harm then good.

I agree that she's attractive. I just felt like the post was a little self indulgent. I agree, RiM, that in the grand scheme of things that it really wasn't as bad as she made it out to be. At least her hair didn't come out orange juice orange.

I don't think that we should remove "in God we trust" from our money nor should we remove the Ten Commandments from our buildings. It bothers me to an extent. I think "we" have gotten a little too big for our britches and we're too quick to say "that offends me, get rid of it". Instead "we" should just buck up and learn to deal with it. Not everyone is always going to agree with everything/everyone. It's a part of being such a diverse country.

I think that a lot of them opened too many doors to allow the govt to twist around them and such.

The ones I dont like are the one for the electoral college. I get at the time maybe it was a good idea but seriously it was made 206 years ago it shoulnt have been an ammendment.

Prohibition was an ammendment in the constitution,that never should have been there.

Ammending the constitution so the federal govt could receive income taxes.

There are several that really just irritate me more then anything as they should have covered everyone in the first place.

Like the 15th ammendment says that race, color or status as a slave formerly cannot ban someone from voting.....that was in 1870 but then they added in 1920 that sex was not a reason to not allow someone to vote.

That one right there reminded me of what you said last night AP about how people could vote for Obama before a woman because at least he is a man....took women 50 years to even get the right to vote after black men....makes you wonder really how far we have come.

The countries we're at war with have little respect for us or their people male or female now. So when I vote I really don't think about them - I think about what I believe is best for our country.

See Melissa with the money thing I dont have a problem with it but honestly I have a big issue with walking into a court house with the Ten Commandments on the front steps and then being told to swear on a bible. If you dont believe in those things what is the message you are getting? If you dont believe in the bible what does swearing on it do?

Shannon-you make a good point. I honestly hadn't thought of that before. I don't think that you should be swearing on a bible period. An oath is what is is whether or not a bible is present, imo.

Melissa I agree it is odd to swear on a bible....Like I said I dont believe in the bible so does that mean that the oath I just said isnt valid? The religious symbols to me just dont belong so prevelantly in courts and govt buildings and such. The money thing I have no problem with because dammit it is the words of our founding fathers people need to get over it already.

Re: Swearing on the bible, do they really do that any more, anyway? I swore witnesses in in court, all the time, and never with a Bible. Sometimes I would say, the "so help you God" portion, sometimes not. If someone is swearing to tell the truth, IMO, it's not a matter of whether it's on a BIble, or "so help you God," because if you're the kind of person who is going to lie under oath, you're the kind of person who is going to lie under oath, Bible, God, Xenu, whatever, aside.

Hee, Shannon! I don't think they do. The standard swear-in for witnesses, though, says, "Do you solemnly swear or affirm that the testimony you are about to give in the cause now pending shall be the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?"

Exactly, Melissa. I couldn't agree more. Even if it's removed, then some will be offended with *that and there's just no making everyone happy. When that's the case, why not defer to tradition, especially since it's not like it's *bad...just different to what you believe? That's another problem I think we have in this country...we aren't allowing ourselves to develop real and lasting traditions on a national level. People need that and need to embrace it, even if it's not exactly what you believe, in order to feel like a cohesive nation where we're all in this thing together. Um, did that last part make sense?

I've never had to swear on a Bible, for whatever that's worth. I have had to swear to tell the truth, As RObin said. I do think that's going by the wayside and frankly, I am glad for that. It's one thing to have the Ten Commandments posted in a lobby but another thing entirely to ask someone to take a personal oath on a religious instrument they don't believe in.

Margaret, you and I definitely vote differently, then. When we're pissing off nations that could have the capability of blowing us apart with nuclear weapons, I think we *must vote with them in mind.

Shannon, re: the Amendments, I honestly have no big issues with any of the Amendments but for the 12th, which redefined elections. Imo, to made everything far too complicated and is a main reason we aren't really a Democracy. The rest pretty much fined tuned things, I think, even if not perfect.

Pakistan elected Benazir Bhutto as Prime Minister a couple of times but she was removed by the President of Pakistan each time. I believe she was assassinated a couple of years back, if memory serves. I do know that while she was elected, she was actually still a fairly conservative Muslim who, while viewing women as people and not property, did not believe in equality for women as we know it.

If the US wanted a leader based on other countries' preferences, we would not have Obama for President. Obama was voted in as an "in your face" to those other countries and for his hope he gave us of change on the domestic and foreign situations.

I think a lot has turned to just money and power, but there are politicians that do care and are working hard to make it better.

I have been at a few events that US Senator Wyden has spoken at on behalf of getting businesses to hire National Guardsmen on their return home. He seems genuinely concerned and is actively working on this. He is from Oregon and so I wondered what your thoughts on him are.

I think that there are two that I have seen from Oregon who actually are an exception to the rule of politicians. Wyden is one of those and Congressman Peter DeFazio is the other. I am sure that every state has a few who remember why they are in office. It is definitely unfortunate that not more remember that WE are the reason they are in office. Personally I would love it if they cut the salaries of all politicians in at least half and made the money less of a reson to get into politics.

Personally, I wish he would run for Pres. He is a good man with the focus towards the people, very smart, and lots of experience with the big players in DC.

I have 'met' her through SIF's BF. She is 17 I do believe and pretty amazing for someone so young. She should be worrying about her senior year of high school but instead has had a lot of health issues. She had an MRI on Tuesday and the doctor called her to come into the office the next day. They found a brain tumor. She is leaving for Miami tomorrow (Friday)for further testing and to set up her surgery day which will probably be early next week.

Just keep her in your thoughts please that everything goes smoothly and she can get on with life as normal.

I think a big part of it is that she is the same age as my son......why does the mom in me get me so hard when it is something like this that it really could be my kid?

From what I have gotten to know with her she is such a good kid and I just hope she gets to have a nice long life.

And now I'm not sure we're disagreeing. I think ew may be agreeing but looking at the same act from different perspectives. I've always owned that a big part of why I voted for him was because with our position as one of the biggest shit-ass countries in the world we were in, electing a dark skinned man with an Arabic name and a vaguely Muslim background could be one of the best moves we ever made in relation to world policy and improving others' view of us. Up until his refusal to waive the Jones Act, I think this *did improve how other countries view us. And yes, I wanted to vote against the rich, old, white man standard we've had, as well. I will even admit to really, really liking the very "friends" some objected to. I like the Rev. Jeremiah White and I like Van Jones...a lot. I even like Bill Ayers, had he not tried to actually hurt people. I draw lines there but I respect him for having strong beliefs and actively trying to accomplish them, even if I disagree with how he went about it. My long-winded point is that I even supported Obama's more radical (possible) ideals. To this day, I'll give him credit for how he's handling Israel, for example. I still want to love the man as much as I did...I just can't.

I think she's just incredibly happy with her life. That's not to say you aren't with yours and God knows I'd have had an accidental-on-purpose overdose if I had her life, but I think that's what it is.

Melissa - Make the trifle! I know it is tricky and stressful but the effect (and taste) is delightful. My mom used to make that for Mother's Day tea.

Mulie - I seriously looked at homeschooling with my son, since he has such a hard time staying focused in the classroom setting. I just knew, though, that even with all the great support and networks around here, I just do not have the ability to be effective. I admire anyone that can do it effectively and enjoy it.
I think you are smart to ask yourself is it right for you first. Hope that makes sense, and sorry for all the "I"s.

Well, except from 5th through 10th grades, we homeschooled and I have to say that unless a parent is willing to used an accredited, well-rounded homeschooling program that involves guidance from outside professionals, I don't think most parents have any business homeschooling the middle and high school years. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad we did it...Jake is a misfit who just doesn't work well in a typical school environment. His elementary school was excellent, allowed for individuality, and he thrived in a few years he spent there but middle and high school was a dismal mess. I still believe traditional school is best for most kids *if you can get them in a really good one that doesn't see them as income-makers, be it public or proivate. So, there you go - the view of a homeschooling mom who isn't a huge fan of homeschooling.

Around here, there are a lot of accredited programs and many home schooled kids. There are also a lot of religious based home school circles. Mostly Apostolic Lutheran. I don't know much about those programs.

I don't know either, Kaytie. I know A BEKA used to be excellent if you were wanting a truly good education mixed with Christian teachings and values but for all I know, there are better programs out there. We basically unschooled, though, when he was younger. It was what he needed but again, I'd never recommend it for everyone.

I was driving home a bit ago and (don't even ask the chain of thought that went into this) was nosy about something so, I'll ask. :-D What do y'all want done with yourselves when you die? Organ donor or not? Buried, cremated, flown into space, make into a diamond? And where do you want your remains to wind up, as in geographical location?

Well, I'm an organ donor because I felt it was only right to donate if I'd support a loved one who wished to receive an organ. I would not do so myself. I'm rethinking this, now, however. Otherwise, cremated and dumped in Norris Lake (TN) with my dad if I die soon or dumped off my backyard into the Cumberland River if I'm living back in KY by then. But, in the last couple of years I've been giving serious thought to donating myself to the Body Farm in Knoxville. I like knowing I could help people even after I die, you know? But if anyone who loves me would be bothered by this option, I'd never do it.

This isn't a good time to ask what everyone is doing for dinner, is it?

You can still be a body donor after organ donation. I will double check that.
Having real cadavers and parts in Anatomy helped me greatly in college. To me it is a noble gift to higher education.

And I am currently baking potatos and getting the steaks ready for grilling. Spinach salad prepped.

Glad you brought up the subject AP. So many are scared to talk about that and code statuses.

I know for sure I will be cremated I have told everyone that I will be a ghost regardless but dammit if you want Shannon the friendly ghost you will NOT put my ass in a box and put me under the ground!!!

I want to have my ashes speread in the Pacific unless someone wants to take me to Egypt to the pyramids :)

I have not yet decided about if I will be an organ donor or not. Part of me wants to because it will help others out but part of me wants to be whole...it is weird.

I feel strongly about organ donation. I honestly don't understand why a person would choose not to donate healthy organs and tissue to people who would otherwise die. It really makes no sense to me. You don't need it and it will be literally turned to ash or pickled.

In case you haven't already figured it out, I am an organ donor and I would like to be cremated. I have told my husband that if the he and the kids would like to paint me up and weep over my coffin, they can do so, but I think that is a big fat waste of time, money, and effort. I say that since the living are left to deal with the death, then do what makes them feel better. I have said I want to be cremated though.

My husband is undecided, because he hopes to be raised from the dead by aliens, but is thinking of being cremated, so he can't be turned to a zombie and be forced to become a solider of the Army of the Living Dead. I would choose to cremate him unless he was killed in relation to the military. If that were the case, I think I would have him buried in a National Cemetery.

Because I feel it's playing God, saying that God made a mistake and I'm not comfortable with that in any form and become even less so the older I get. God doesn't make mistakes...this is what He intended for that person. As a side issue, I also don't think it's right for anyone to benefit monetarily from parts of a body.

Interesting. Do you follow this tho=inking in everything? Like eye surgery or eye problems in general? Wouldn't cataracts and other eye problems be in "God's" will for that person?

Hi, C, it's nice to meet you that's an good question. Sure, God created cataracts but fixing them won't alter the course of her natural life. I don't have issues with all medical intervention in the least - only that which alters the natural beginning or ending of life. I'm all for setting broken bones, stitching up gaping wounds, even more "modern" things like taking care of cataracts, cochlear implants, etc...things that make life better while it exists without altering the natural run. I do try to follow it in all my thinking, yes. Occasionally I run across something and realize I'm being hypocritical so I try to correct that but hey, I'm human. ;-) Anything else you'd like to ask me?

Do you think God made certain people smarter and that maybe he intended for those to come up with ways to help others? Doctors and researchers to prolong life or save those dying, cancer treatments, stem cell research, et al?

It's so good to see you again. :-) Anyway, I'm not in God's mind so I sure wouldn't claim anything I believe to be a fact but that has an element of game playing in it to me and the God I believe in isn't much of a game player, you know? And it's those same "smarter" people who created nuclear weapons, chemical warfare, etc. Are we supposed to use those, as well, because God gave some smarter people the power to create them? Just thinking out loud here...well, and putting you on the spot. ;-)

God doesn't make mistakes...this is what He intended for that person." but I have to think that if it would save my child(ren), or myself thus having more time with said child(ren) I would have no problem being on either end of donation.
Also, if god makes no mistakes, would that apply to organ transplants for birth defects/genetic problems only? What if you needed an organ b/c of trama from an accident or exposure?

I don't really want to be cremated, but I don't want my children to feel an obligation to go 'visit' my remains at a cemetary. Or feel bad if they *don't. There is a program that allows your remains to be mixed with something (cement, metal, ??) and sunken in a man made reef in the Atlantic. We fish at alot of these reefs as a family, and I would much rather them rememer me while doing that.

Erin, when it comes to transplants, I have problems with them for anyone and for any reason. Just my own beliefs, though, and nothing I'd ever try to enforce on others legally or anything.

I love the reef idea, it's lovely and a nice way for them to remember you. I never knew about this program.

I get where you are coming from but I think a lot of things now are man made - more pollutants, toxins, etc so more cancer, etc - but I guess if it comes down to it - survival of the fittest.

Oh, sure, many things - bad things - are man made. But transplants and such aren't going to make us more fit as a species. Just the opposite, in fact. To become more fit as a species we have to learn to adapt to all of this mess we've created naturally, develop natural immunities to it all, over time. Does that make sense?

Erin, it's *is a nice idea. Maybe not as helpful as my Body Farm idea but infinitely nicer for one's family. :-)

I believe in donation because once I'm gone I can't use my organs, eyes, skin anymore - if I can help someone else so be it. Most of us would not be alive today without the help of modern medicine - to me organ donation is just part of that. I don't believe in selling organs.

With that said, the older I get the more pro I am at Organ Donation. Especially skin. I hope I live long enough to see lung implants become routine for cystic fibrosis. Growth or transplant of varying nerve cells for treating spinal chord injuries. Growth or transplant of cells to treat Parkinson's and various other nerve or muscle diseases such as ALS.

There are transplants I am not a proponent of, ie, on very premature infants, liver transplants for alcoholics or IV drug abusers, to name a few.

Kaytie, there's great comfort in our differences. It's good. :-) I am curious why you'd support transplants for some and not others, though. I've got to tell you it's a bit startling to see premature babies lumped together with UV drug users but I think I might understand. Is it about the viability of the organ in that particular life? The odds of it actually being useful long-term?

I think you mean like on some medical list or whatever (or maybe I'm wrong), but are you okay with doctors and hospitals making a profit on the actual procedures? Also, do you think a person shouldn't sell their own kidney, say, if they wanted to?

AP - Not sure with all Organ Donar Teams - but the one here pays for all of the expense incurred by family and professionals in re: to the time of being declared a Donor through surgery and transport. Not sure about Transplant time.
The Donor Harvest Surgical Teams are the ones that harvest, not the hospital staff, and even though I may be doing the nursing care, I work in tandem with a Donor member that does the ordering. I am also friends with a man that has a plane and pilot's license that donates his time and expense when asked to pick up or transport an Organ.
My details in reimbursement may not be solid, but I think it does show they are not in this to make a huge profit. Would be interesting to find out, though.

Hi all. I read some of this last night from my phone and couldn't wait to come in and rattle AP's cage. FTR, I'm being buried beside my mother and I already have a plot. And I am an organ donor and I agreed to donate my mother's organs as well. Sadly, they were all destroyed during her transport to the hospital and none were harvestable.

On with the cage rattling. Ohhhh APPPPPP.....

Mulie, yep, it is a slippery sloe and there are things I find myself conflicted on. And Jeanette, abortion is one of those things. I used to be perfectly fine with the idea. Now? I waver as I've gotten older and thought more about it. I don't believe life begins until it's viable outside the womb, though, so basically it's the potential for life that makes me waver around some.

Thank you for saying that, it was and is very sad. I have recently decided though that she is better off now. She had a handful of painful illnesses that made her life hell, and an abusive husband. I'll never think it was ok for her life to end the way it did, but now instead of her laying in pain and getting smacked around on over 600 miles away where I couldn't see her, she is right here in Ohio and I can visit her anytime I want, and so can my children. And she will never feel pain again.

I only brought up the organ donation because I didn't feel I should jump into the convo without voicing my preferences... and then wanted to respond to AP and let her know I'm mostly in a good place with it all now. Hope no one thinks I'm being a Debbie Downer.

I am kind of around guys sorry.....Mikala has her surgery today and being the nervous cleaner that I am I have been terrorizing my house and everyone in it for days!!!!

We will be leaving the house in a little over an hour and OF COURSE starting tomorrow we are supposed to be pushing mid 90's if not 100....so when we get home we get to clean up the air conditioner unit and put it in her window since she will have to be in there with the door closed and everything.

And for some of the convo that has been happening....I am all for improving life but sometimes stuff is more about prolonging life. We will all die someday that is just how it is and when it is my time I want to go with grace not have someone do stuff to make it last longer.

Dont know if that makes sense or not.

Dead, dead, dead around here.

What's everyone doing for dinner? Fried fish, hush puppies, biscuits and pea salad here. I was uninspired and just grabbed what I found in the freezer, which was fish, hush puppies, biscuits and peas, lol. I also found a forgotten stash of 7 or 8 bags of cranberries so I laid one out to thaw. Has anyone ever tried making a cobbler out of cranberries?

Mikala is home now and resting. She is doing pretty good and is now 4 1/2 lbs lighter then she was this morning. We got home about an hour ago and she is now comfy in her bed :)

We are having pot roast as I could start it this morning and have it ready to eat when we finally got home.

Good morning ladies, it's been a while, waaaay to long.

We have been busy working on our school's 4th of July parade float since we returned from vacation, so I have been veeery scarce, but I have tried to read along to see what's up.

We have a neighborhood pancake breakfast the morning of the parade, then complete the float, then parade, the after-party then fireworks.

I want a CLOSED casket, just awesome photos of me :). I want to be cremated. I want some of my ashes to be put into the sound where we vacation each year, then whoever can keep them or share them. I do *not want to be put in the ground!

I am an organ donor. I believe if I can improve someone's quality of life, that would be awesome.

Too late for last night's dinner (which was Chinese food that made me a sick mess) but tonight we're having Greek Chicken, Red Onion and Mint Kebabs with some couscous, cucumber/tomato/feta/red onion salad.

Mulie - I bought some really nice blackberries over the weekend and made a blackberry/rhubarb crisp that was really, really good.

I dont know if my last post is going to show up or not but in case it doesnt I will quickly recap:

She got her drains out this morning and is feeling pretty good considering. They look really good and she is pleased with the size so far.

It will take about 6 weeks to be completely healed but she should be much better in about 2-3 weeks.

and whenever blogger decides to behave I will put a new post up.

Good to see you too AP! We've been incredibly busy 'round these parts.

So much so, that Kathryn fell asleep on the sofa at 4:30 yesterday afternoon, I tried to wake her up at 5 for dinner. Instead, a three headed dragon woke up and bawled for 15 minutes, so Mark put her in her bed. I tried to wake her up 7:00, no avail, then finally got her on the potty at 7:30, fed her some leftovers. She stayed up until about 9:30 and slept all night. She was one tired kiddo!

So, if anyone cares, I put a new blog post up on the creation of our float.

Hey, I just saw Lindsay Lohan got 90 days in jail and 90 days in an in-house treatment facility once she's release. It's still not what a lot of people would have gotten for 2 DUIs and possession of cocaine, but at least it's something, for a change. We'll see how long they actually make her serve.

Did y'all hear about Mel Gibson's latest ugly-fest? And so I keep up some celebrities...so? :-D

Oh, and Erin, I wound up just oooking them into a sauce. I did add some guava paste I found in the freezer and some lime peel, trying to make it more summery. It turned out pretty good.

Miss Arse goes in tomorrow morning (at 7:30, ack!) for her first surgery. I should have her home by 2pm, but I'm not sure when I'll be online and I expect some issues since she tends to have trouble with any anesthetics at all. Think good thoughts, please? She won't die or anything, I don't mean that...just pray she's not all vomit-y. Thanks!

Muliette is doing very, very well! She is just darling and seems to be in a better mood this week. I have been working hard to maintain my supply. My hormones still feel pretty whacked out. Still kind of having my period, headaches, neck problems, and cramps from hell. Being a woman is so awesome.

I just finished the book "In Her Shoes." Anyone else read it? Has it been made into a movie?

Mulie, newp, MWOP is staying up. I'm glad. I don't go often and can't stand some of the pettiness there, some of the nitpicking, but the info put forth is still good and, imo, deserved. I don't like liars and I don't like hypocrites; I always enjoy seeing both exposed.

Hello Daisys!! LONG time since I've been here - real life just keeps me hopping specially now that its summer time, but will try to hop in more frequently! As usual its after midnight and nobody probably awake - but I promise to try to come in during evening hours tomorrow and say hello!! Hope everyone is having a good summer so far! My kids and grands are keeping me hopping, and our apartment has a pool so the kids have been taking advantage of that and coming to swim, which turns into dinner and then playing outside after dinner - helps that we have a/c and the girls don't so they come to me for cooling relief!! I love it though!!
