Have you tried taking prenatal vitamins, Margaret? I lost tons of hair after my boys, but so far, I haven't lost much this time. My hair didn't really grow much during this pg, but is growing like crazy now.

I will say the first week or two is not cute. I think my hair might look better if I got my hair cut. I haven't had one since right before I had the baby and I don't have the extra money to get one right now. It's weird. My hair looks so much darker. I am thinking of letting my highlights grow out. It is fall after all!

My scalp starts feeling oogey when I skip even a day washing it. I have very fine, straight hair. Mousse and spray to make it look decent.

Spend entirely too much money on getting my hair colored professionally.

All so people say "you don't look a day over 35!"

Margaret:
it may well be your meds or circulatory response. Yours is a special case because of your heart history and also your allergies. Not trying to freak you out AT ALL - just pointing out that you are special and normal age appropriate or prenatal supplements may help, but your case may not be run of the mill.

When you get your check up - ask them if they will run a full panel on your thyroid, electrolytes, hormones, blood count, and what they can of vitamins and minerals.

Stress has a lot to do with not only your immune system, but sometimes wreaks havoc on hair loss.

Yeesh, I sound like those long winded qualifiers at the end of drug commercials!

I have fine, curly hair and used to be an every day hair washer, but as the kids have come along, so did infrequent hair washing. It is so weird to think I am not "washing" my hair, but I was around my parents for 2 days before I told them about my hair. Their only comment was, "your hair looks darker." I am not sure that coloring my hair would be the best idea with out commercial hair products.

Muliebrity said...

Christy, How often do you "wash" it? Are you able to style your hair? When I try to style (straighten) my hair, it doesn't hold very long, and I could get it to last days before. :/

Deb said...

Christy - what kind of vinegar do you use? just curious.

Margo said...

KJ - thanks for your input!

OT - the census tells us that 1 in 7 Americans is living in poverty - so why people who can't afford the kids they have keep breeding! I know that sounds hateful but it breaks my heart that kids go without and their idiot parents just keep having more.

KaytieJ said...

Margaret - Because they can.
Not being facetious. Both men and women, and even sadder, boys and girls, are being irresponsible.

Deb said...

Margo - part of me thinks because they feel they will get bailed out by the gov't with welfare, etc. The other part thinks they are not thinking in the first place, selfish, living in the moment (having unprotected sex) and not thinking big picture, until the preg. test comes back ooops.

I know too many young girls that seem to think that having a baby is 'cool'.....And then with these "adults" who think it is their so called duty or what not to keep having more and more and more babies. Personally I think it is a travesty when when, say, a woman goes on welfare with baby #1....gets all set up with a house and money and food and anything else she wants....then she pops out a kid every two years and keeps getting more and more and more and more. Where is the line? It is nothing more then a trap and then she raises these kids in this trap and they dont know any different....they need to make rules and regulations where they are proactive in getting people off of assistance and if they keep popping kids out while on it then they get no more money. Yeah I get that the kids will suffer but seriously there are times that it is seriously out of control.

Deb, I have used both ACV and white vinegar. I think I like the plain white better.

Mulie, I think I do it about every other day. I don't do much to my hair but it does keep it's style pretty well. How long has it been since you switched? It takes awhile for your hair to adjust. It's interesting that yours would darken...I hadn't heard of that effect. Maybe that's from hormone changes after the baby?

CK, you *don't look a day over 35!

Not washing my hair makes me feel icky.

Does anyone know of a website that tells what portion of proceeds/donations are actually used for charities/organizations?

Anonymous said...

Melissa, try these:

I am gone for a few days and come back to people washing their hair every 3 weeks? LOL! What's going on people!! haha I wash mine every 3 days. First day wash, style. Second day, has that great tossled look, third day, hat..then wash. LOL My hair is so blonde, natural of course, cough cough if I strip it too much it can get dry.

And yeah, these people who can't afford babies just need to stop. I don't understand why a person would want to bring a life into the world to just be like them. Never break that cycle, etc.

Melissa said...

Christy-Thanks the charity navigator one was what I was looking for. I just couldn't remember the name of it.

twirldawg said...

The thought of no-poo is interesting. Maybe when I run out of shampoo I'll try it.
I have really thick hair so washing it everyday is not practical.

Anonymous said...

Mulie...I just remembered that there is another method for curly hair.

http://www.wikihow.com/Follow-the-Curly-Girl-Method-for-Curly-Hair

PJ said...

My daughter read and followed the Curly Girl philosophy when she was in middle school and high school.

Pet peeve of mine - people having kids they can't afford.

Especially when they know better. Remember, it's not always women on welfare - sometimes it devout Christian women who believe it's God who decides when they get pregnant, rather than the sperm and egg having a up close and personal experience.

"Upstanding" couples who see women's value mainly to have and care for more children. Gah....

Lisa said...

Ooooh, fun conversation!

Okay, so can someone tell me what the goal of no-poo is? If I did it, what would I be trying to accomplish? And I've got to say, I've tried vinegar rinses and even rinsing it out well, people can still smell vinegar on me a day later. That concerns me, but maybe I'm a super-absorbent or something, as opposed to a regular.
My hair is very thick and coarse, almost wiry, but my scalp is oily and the idea of not using something to really wash with disturbs me a bit.

Lisa said...

As for what Margaret asked, I think both Deb and CK are right. Plus, it is a status in many poor areas...the more kids you have, the "richer" you are. Kids are viewed as material possessions, which instantly devalues them, imo. We need to stop additional funds being issues for additional kids. It may take awhile, but eventually, it'll sink in.

suz said...

Hey Daisies!
Been lurking about today.(muhahaha) No Poo? No thanks. I don't think I would like a vinegar rinse either. And Lisa, that is an excellent question. Why no poo?
Ck Reminded me of something (Hi CK) I went to a church one time, and all the people I met were like "hi,what is your name? How many kids do you have?" When I told them I did not have any kids, they did not know what to say to me and basically ignored my after that. I was attending this church for the first time with my kid bearing family and felt very, uh, slighted? Devalued? Because I did not have children. I was introduced to 5-6 ladies that day and they all treated me the same way. I only visited that one time. Crazy huh?

Lisa, I prefer not to use shampoo because of the harsh ingredients. Even organic products have ingredients that may be harmful and they cost a small fortune.
If your hair still smells like vinegar after rinsing, maybe you used too much. Did you dilute it?
I know it wounds weird, but it's really not. Shampoo is a relatively new thing. This link has good info on how and why:

wounds weird = sounds weird

Anonymous said...

I know this is boring, but here is one more link regarding ingredients.

http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/about.php

Goodnight!

Lisa said...

Christy, not at all boring, thanks for the links! And I diluted the vinegar half and half...I still use vinegar and think it's good for the scalp, but not if I need to go anywhere for awhile. I've got to tell you, if this works for you, hey...can't beat success. But if I need to save money and skip a $1 bottle of VO5 shampoo, I've got bigger issues than my hair (not at all implying that's you...ack!...commenting on the "cost-saving aspect mentioned in these links). As for chemicals, I do get that, having a super-sensitive entire head but I'll stick with my Dr. Bronner's. Yep, it's $8 for a bottle but that bottle lasts me 2 months and that's using it over my entire body. Here are the ingredients, so pretty darn safe, I think: INGREDIENTS: Water, Saponified Organic Coconut*, Organic Palm* and Organic Olive* Oils (w/Retained Glycerin), Organic Hemp Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Essential Oils**, Citric Acid, Vitamin E

Like I said, I think it's great if it works for you but I can't see myself being okay with it. That might be psychological, though. Now I have a super-nosy question for you and Mulie...what do you wash your body with? Or do you use baking soda and vinegar on the rest of you, too?

Lisa said...

And more nosy questions, since my mind is now rambling and somewhat intrigued, still...what do you wash your clothing in?

PJ said...

Hey Suz, Lisa and Christy.

PJ said...

What do you all wash your dishes in (sink, not dishwasher?) When I try the natural stuff, husband complains it doesn't suds up as much. He says it doesn't clean as well too.

Lisa said...

Checking back in...CK and I are Nosy Nellies. :-)

Shannon said...

Popping back in for a minute.....I promise a new post today at some point :)

I tried to use a "green" dish soap and I hated it....it did not cut the grease and for any of the stuff that doesnt go into the dishwasher after the sink it was horrible because we had to wash it forever just to get it ungreasy.

Lisa said...

I haven't had great luck with the "green" products, either. Well, except for vinegar and baking soda. I keep thinking about this no-poo thing, not that I want to do it, but there's really not a reason in the world it wouldn't work fine. Shoot, I run vinegar and baking soda down my drains to keep them clean and they have to be dirtier than hair.

Margo said...

Hi girls.

Suzzzzzzzzz - I miss you lady.

"We need to stop additional funds being issues for additional kids. It may take awhile, but eventually, it'll sink in" - I think that's the answer too.

Margo said...

In the colonial days they used burnt toast for tooth paste - made for a really pretty smile :)

Lisa said...

I can solve the toothbrushing thing for us...miswaks on me! http://tinyurl.com/2wqwyhg

Christy, the Charlie's products are expensive! And no pretty scented fabric softeners, so I'd be lost. ;-) You could be right about the no-poo thing helping but I'd want to try it when I'm not going anywhere for days and days to make sure I don't smell of vinegar. Plus, if I'm going to be really honest here, it seems like a lot of work.

Anonymous said...

Lisa, you can dilute the Charlie's All Purpose Cleaner, but I don't use that...just the laundry powder. I bought the 5 Gallon Bucket and it comes out to about 10 cents per load which I think is a pretty good price. No there are no scents, but I'm not a fan of synthetics so it's perfect for me.

Using baking soda/ vinegar isn't much work IMO...you can pre-mix it and have it ready to use in the shower. Did you see that you should use about 1 TBS of vinegar per cup of water? Using it 50/50 strength is probably too strong. If you dilute it you really shouldn't smell it when it's dry.

Anonymous said...

Do you use the miswaks? How long do they last?

Burnt toast! Was that about the time people were still bathing once a year?

Lisa said...

I may well just be using the vinegar too strong, then. The mix you mention just doesn't seem like it would do much, though. And me? Use a miswak? Lol, not hardly. I tried it once, many years ago and I think it's gross. It's natural, though, and many people use them so hey. I do use baking soda and peroxide mixed on my teeth to whiten them...it does a good job.

Sandy said...

Hey Ladies. Long time no see.

Nothing new here. The kids are doing really great in school. C loves it.

Speaking of C she is now wearing glasses. She looks really cute in them too.

Oh and last night my Hunk of Burning Love surprised me. He had our firewood delivered!! All warm and toasty in the house now. It's rather damp and chilly here today.

How's everyone doing?

Lisa said...

Hey, Sandy, it's good to see you and I'm glad y'all are doing good!

Hunk of Burning Love? ROFL!

Hi Sandy :)

Sandy said...

Lisa, I've just taken a new approach with my husband. The praise has done wonders for us. He is a wonderful provider.

He has plans on going hunting soon.

How have you been?

Hi Christy!

Lisa said...

I've been fine, thanks, although not quite as fine as it sounds like you've been. :-D What's he going hunting for?

Sandy said...

Geese, I think.

Lisa said...

Oh. Do wild geese have much meat on them?

Shannon said...

So you get to have a Christmas goose roasted over the fire Sandy?

HI Ladies....:)

The dish soap I used was the Costco stuff....I like the febreeze stuff they have and the laundry soap but the dish soap was just cruddy.

Sandy said...

I don't think the wild geese do. I'm hoping for some venison. They were going to open some areas here because of over population.

Yes, we will have our Christmas goose.

Lisa said...

"I don't think the wild geese do. I'm hoping for some venison. They were going to open some areas here because of over population."

It's a shame we can't do that with people. ;-)

Joking, joking! I hope he gets lots of geese and deer for you all and maybe enough to share. He certainly does sound like he's become a wonderful provider!

Sandy said...

He has Lisa. He really has turned a new leaf.

PJ said...

Sandy - where will you cook the Christmas goose?

Lisa said...

Cool...you will have salad, too. ;-)

Okay, I'm out of here for awhile. 'Bye!

PJ said...

hehe, Lisa. Sorry to have stepped on your punch line.

Erin said...

Hi ladies. This conversation made me think of something Janey said last week. It was a cool, drizzly day. She says "Hmmm. This is a good day for hunting." ??wtheck?? No more Little House on the Praire.

Sandy said...

We will have salad. I grew different types of lettuce in the garden.

PJ said...

Sandy - did you have trouble keeping the lettuce watered enough?

suz said...

Good afternoon ladies, almost cocktail 30 on the west coast.:)
Sandy my husband is a hunter too. Not so much birds any more but deer and other big game. Will be a hunters widow until December. I like the venison.
Hi CK
Hey Margaret!! Miss you too girl!

PJ said...

Sandy,
We had a huge buck in our backyard the last few evenings. He's eating the apples on our trees.

Too bad it's not hunting season yet.

PJ said...

Hi Suz!

Margo said...

Christy - the folks in colonial days brushed every day but they also had wooden teeth.

Sandy - I'm so glad to hear that your rock o'love has come around.

Wazzz up, CK?

PJ said...

Being a bum today, Margaret. What's up with you?

Margo said...

Nada - watching Dexter.

Sandy said...

CK, the Hunk watered the lettuce. ::blushing::

Lisa said...

"CK, the Hunk watered the lettuce. ::blushing::"

*covers eyes*

We all know this isn't what really happened.

Josh and Rya said...

Hello? Anyone on here?

Lisa said...

Hi, J&R! How are you?

Sandy said...

Lisa, it's true. He was amazing. He was so gentle with the lettuce. It brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it.

Oh, did I tell you we got a fish.

PJ said...

A big fish, Sandy?

Lisa said...

Sandy, does he do it for you or for others, too?
And no, I did not know you got a fish...do tell!

I had a good evening...I got a bright orange wallet. I've been needing a new one, love them in fun colors and found a perfect Liz Claiborne one at Marshall's. Best part? Get this - $7, since it was missing the box. Well, and Jake said it might be because it's bright orange, too. Whatever. It makes me very happy. :-)

Tammi said...

Lisa...I think Jake is on to something..:)

Saw Edgar Winter Group last night...they freaking rocked the house! It was awesome! Even the older boys loved it! I got a pic with the hotty drummer. ha!

Just chilling today....what about everyone else?

Lisa said...

Tammi, it's more of a bright apricot. It's pretty. Really. :-P And that's a concert I'm really envious of you getting to see!

I'm not doing much...have a chicken shepard's/pot pie thing in the oven and we just got back from a search of good looking knock-off sunglasses. Just a lazy day. :-)

Margo said...

Sandy - it's wonderful to hear of the turn around in your husband. Will he share his meat? My brother gives a lot of deer to a food bank for the poor.

Tammi said...

Lisa...did you see my pics on FB? We were right up front. I did a little video of Frankenstein on my phone, but it was too loud...sounds like crap.

And my husband better not share his meat! LOL!!
Sorry...I had to. :)
